Decorating my cell with a plastic cross necklace and crafting a shelf using toothpaste showcased the resilience and resourcefulness that can bloom even in the harshest environments.</p><p><br>I delved into the nuances of prison life, from making a “car” out of cardboard and string to talk to others nearby, &nbsp;to the necessity of routines for maintaining sanity. Physical exercise became a cornerstone of my daily life, offering a semblance of normalcy amidst the constraints of confinement.</p><h3><br>Communication and Routine in Solitary Confinement</h3><p><br>Seeking connection, I reached out to my dad, aiming to bridge past tensions and understand the differences in our respective prison experiences. Reconnecting with figures from my past, like Pete Dykema, the disciplinarian from my High School, allowed for introspection and growth as I contemplated the actions that got me expelled my senior year and how I could clean up my side of the street.&nbsp;</p><p><br>The importance of apology and forgiveness intertwined with excerpts from Hebrews 12, emphasizing the transformative power of discipline and faith. I discovered the therapeutic benefits of puzzles, such as crosswords and Sudoku. </p><blockquote><p>These activities provided me with a much-needed mental challenge and a sense of accomplishment. </p></blockquote><p>Establishing routines and finding purpose within my daily schedule helped me stay focused and resilient in the face of adversity.</p><h3><br>The Challenges of Keeping the Mind Busy</h3><p><br>Peter asked a thought-provoking question about how I kept my mind occupied during the 23 hours per day spent in my cell. I shared a rather unexpected approach that I took during my time in solitary confinement—I decided to teach myself how to write with my right hand. It may seem like a trivial pursuit, but in the absence of anything else to do, it's essential to find creative ways to stay engaged and prevent boredom from becoming overwhelming.</p><h3><br>The Experience of Rec Yard Time</h3><p><br>Veronica posed a couple of fascinating questions about the limited time spent outside the cell. In solitary confinement, the word "solitary" holds great significance. While we were allowed one hour out of the cell, there was no opportunity for interaction with other inmates. Every movement outside the cell was meticulously controlled, with two correctional officers accompanying us. As my court proceedings progressed, I eventually received a three-year to ten-year sentence. The weight of the sentence hit me hard, as I realized I would miss out on important milestones and events in my loved ones' lives. Being confined in a six feet by fourteen feet cell for twenty-three hours plus a day was a harsh reminder of the consequences of my actions. </p><p>The isolation and the weight of my poor choices weighed heavily on me. However, as time went on, my mindset began to change. I matured and learned valuable lessons about life, responsibility, and the consequences of my actions.</p><p>This opportunity allowed me to rebuild my life and gave me a chance to reflect on the person I had become.
